Family, friends, and colleagues had gathered to pay tribute to Grace, a beloved teacher and mother.
Her son, John, only ten years old, was sitting in the front row, next to his father, holding a small folded paper boat in his hand. It was a precious keepsake, a final connection to his mother, one he had learned to fold alongside her.
Everyone shared stories of how Grace had touched their lives, speaking of her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for children.
When it was time to say goodbye, John stood up, accompanied by his father, and walked up to the coffin. He gently placed his ear against it and whispered a few words. At that moment, a complete silence fell over the church.
Everyone fell silent, not knowing what to say.
John knelt beside the coffin, his small body trembling just slightly.
He placed his ear against the coffin. A few moments passed in a heavy silence, then he whispered: “Mom, I will be brave, and I’ll look out for dad too. I promise.”
Everyone remained frozen, the emotion hanging in the air.
Then, with a small sigh, he stood up, his eyes full of tears he dared not let fall.
He handed the paper boat to his father, who took it gently, as if this gesture held the promise of an everlasting love.
The boy held his father’s hand, looking at him with all the strength a child can have when carrying the weight of a mother’s love he would never lose.
Grace hadn’t really gone.
She lived on in her son, in every memory he would cherish.
