Three months ago my life cracked apart. It happened by accident: Daniel was in the shower when his phone, left on the bedside table, lit up with an incoming message.
“Deal for the house in Lesnoy is finalized. Documents are made out to V., as agreed. When should the keys be handed over?”
The message included a photo: a stylish two‑story house, panoramic windows, a spacious terrace. Perfect… for whom?
I had never heard of either the house or any person with the initial V. But inside me, I had already understood everything.
I remained expressionless. At that moment he came out of the bathroom holding a small box.
“It’s your anniversary — and this is your gift,” he said, handing me a costly bracelet encrusted with stones. Glamour, sparkle… but no soul.
Such a gift can be given to any woman.
“Thank you,” I replied calmly, allowing him to fasten the bracelet on my wrist.
Then I took a plain white envelope from my purse.
“This — is for you,” I said.
He squinted: “What’s inside?”
“You’ll open it later. Do you promise?” — I smiled softly and laid my hand over his.
He nodded and slid the envelope into the inner pocket of his jacket.

When he entered the house, I sat silently with a glass of wine. He looked tense, as if he sensed something.
Without a word, Daniel took the envelope out of his pocket and opened it. A few seconds — and his face went pale. He stood motionless, staring at the documents in his hands.
Inside were copies of messages, screenshots of the chat, an extract from the property registry and — the cherry on top — my own rental agreement for that very “secret” apartment, signed just three days prior. In the name of… his mistress. Yes, I had discovered who “V.” was. And I rented that apartment. So that she could never go back there.
I rose from the sofa and walked over calmly.
— Did you think I would never find out? That one can live a double life without consequence?
He remained silent. Didn’t even attempt to justify himself. He just clenched the documents as if he wanted to burn them with his gaze.
— I knew for a long time. But I waited for the right moment. A gift for the anniversary — you like surprises, don’t you?
I handed him another envelope. He flinched. Inside were the divorce papers.
— This is not vengeance. This is liberation, — I whispered, looking him straight in the eyes.
He said nothing. Just sat on the edge of the sofa, staring into space.
I grabbed the suitcase I had packed in advance and headed for the exit. At the door, I turned around:
— Oh yes. If she ever decides to return to “her house” — there now lives a family with three children. I have sublet the apartment. With a contract. For a year.
The door closed behind me gently, almost silently.
And in that moment, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time — freedom. True freedom. Without lies. Without bracelets worth thousands of euros. Without a “double life”. Just myself.
