During the last years of her life, my grandmother was seriously ill 
. I loved her dearly, and I visited her regularly 
. One day, while I was alone with her, she asked me to promise her something. Taking advantage of the fact that no one else was around, she looked me in the eyes 
and insisted that I make this promise.
She asked me to remove her photo from her gravestone one year after her death. Surprised and upset 
, I tried to convince her that her time hadn’t come yet and that she would stay with us. But she smiled gently 
and insisted, “Just promise me that.” So, I agreed, although I didn’t understand why she wanted this.
That night, she passed away peacefully 
. Over time, I forgot about the promise. A year later, I remembered it and hurried to the grave. I removed the photo, and what I discovered beneath the image deeply shocked me

Behind the photo, there was another one, of a young woman.
The woman looked a lot like me.
I took the photo and rushed to my grandfather’s house.
I had a thousand questions in my mind.
When my grandfather saw the photo, he smiled, but there was a sadness in his eyes.
He told me it was my grandmother, and that he had taken this photo himself.
Another question began to torment me: why hide this photo?
Grandfather explained that she cared a lot about her appearance and wondered why we don’t put a youthful photo on gravestones.
She didn’t want people to remember her as an old person.
She wanted others to see her as she was: beautiful, alive, happy.
