In an unprecedented move, NFL General Manager Roger Goodell has officially imposed the largest fine in NFL history on referee Clay Martin. The hefty fine follows a series of, let’s call them memorable mistakes during the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. Martin, who seemed to be channeling his inner confused fan more than a professional official, certainly earned this new “honor.”

The decision came down after a week of intense scrutiny over Martin’s performance on the field, including missed calls that could have had minor implications (like, you know, determining the outcome of the game). The Bills, understandably frustrated, have already sent out thank-you cards to Goodell, praising his swift action.

NFL fans, however, have yet to decide if this fine is an appropriate response to Martin’s blunders, or if it’s simply the league’s way of ensuring that next time, the referees at least know which team is which.

Stay tuned for more on this scandal… or should we say, “the new benchmark for refereeing errors”!
