Our granddaughter pretended not to know us when we saw her at the restaurant with a man — Her reason surprised us

When Evelyn and George see their granddaughter, Emily, at a fancy restaurant, their joy turns to confusion when she pretends not to know them. Their sadness is compounded by concern as they realize that Emily’s life has become a web of lies. Can they save their granddaughter?

The golden years have been good to us, George and I. We live in a cozy, quiet suburban neighborhood, where the biggest excitement is usually the arrival of the mailman or a particularly talkative squirrel.

Our days are filled with gardening, book clubs and the occasional game of Scrabble, but our greatest joy comes from our granddaughter, Emily. She is our pride and joy. A true careerist, climbing the corporate ladder at a prestigious company.

Although, to be honest, she keeps herself so busy that we don’t see her as much as we’d like. She calls every Sunday, but it’s not the same.

We miss her, and we never imagined that the next time we saw Emily, a conflict would break out that nearly destroyed our bond.

It all started last week with an innocent dinner.

“George,” I said to him one night, “how about we go out one night? There’s this fancy new restaurant that everyone’s talking about. We deserve a little fun, don’t you think?”

George looked up from his newspaper and peered over his reading glasses. “A night out sounds great, Evelyn. Let’s do it.”

So off we went, dressed in our finest, feeling a bit like teenagers on a date. The restaurant was most elegant, with dim lighting and tables covered in white linen. As we finished our meal and thought about dessert, I couldn’t help but glance around the room, admiring the atmosphere.

That’s when I saw her. Our Emily, walking in with a tall, well-dressed man. My heart leapt for joy.

“George, look! It’s Emily!” I greeted her enthusiastically, a wide smile spreading across my face.

But then something strange happened. Emily’s face froze as soon as she saw us. It was like she had seen a ghost. She turned around quickly, pretending not to have seen us. My heart sank, confused and a little hurt.

“George, he saw us. I know he saw us,” I whispered, my excitement turning to concern.

George, ever so calm, patted my hand. “Let’s go say hi to her. There has to be some explanation.”

As we approached her table, my heart sank. I saw the man she was with leaning toward her, his expression unreadable. When we finally reached them, Emily looked up, her eyes wide with something that wasn’t quite fear, but almost.

“Who are they? Please leave me and my friend alone. I don’t know them,” he said in a cold, distant voice.

It was like a punch in the stomach. My own granddaughter, pretending she didn’t know us.

“How can you say that?” I asked, my voice shaking.

Emily’s face reddened, but before she could answer me, George intervened.

“Please excuse us,” he said. “We must have made a mistake.”

I could see the pain in George’s eyes as he drove me away. We left the restaurant in a daze. My heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand pieces.

I couldn’t hold back my tears as we got into the car.

“Why, George? Why would I do that?”

George tried to comfort me, putting a hand on my forearm as he drove. “There has to be a reason, Evelyn. Maybe she was embarrassed or… or something. We’ll talk to her and find out.”

But her words didn’t do much good. All I could think about was Emily’s cold gaze and the chill in her voice. Our sweet Emily, acting like we were strangers.

Back at home, I wiped my tears as I got out of the car. It was getting dark, but our neighbor Abigail was still in her yard. She is a kind woman, always looking out for all the neighbors. Seeing my face covered in tears, she ran over and asked what was wrong.

George, ever firm, explained what had happened. Abigail’s eyes widened in concern.

“He looks like the same man I saw Emily with the other day. They were arguing. He didn’t look good, Evelyn.”

His words added a new layer of worry to my already heavy heart. What was wrong with Emily? Who was the man she was with? And why did she feel the need to pretend we didn’t exist?

That night, lying in bed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Emily was in trouble, and we had to find a way to help her somehow.

But how? The question tormented me as I tried to fall asleep. I was still struggling when the phone rang.

I sat up immediately and looked at George. He was awake too. We exchanged worried glances; no one calls at this hour unless it’s important. I picked up the phone, my heart pounding.

“Hello?” I said, my voice shaking a little.

“Grandma, it’s me, Emily,” she replied shakily, her voice a mess of tears and anxiety. “I’m so sorry. Please, can you and Grandpa forgive me? I swear I’ll explain everything.”

I felt a flood of conflicting emotions: relief at hearing his voice, but also deep, painful concern.

“Honey, of course! I’ll make a cup of tea and…”

“No, not on the phone,” Emily hissed.

A new wave of anxiety washed over me. “Come over tomorrow and we’ll sort it out then, okay?”

Emily agreed and ended the call before he could tell her how much he loved her.

The next morning, I paced the living room, glancing out the window every few minutes, waiting for Emily. George was sitting in his favorite chair, looking worried but trying to remain calm.

Emily’s car finally arrived and she approached the door looking more fragile than ever.

He came in and as soon as he saw us, he burst into tears.

“Grandma, Grandpa, I’m so sorry!” she cried, throwing herself into my arms. I hugged her tightly, feeling her body shake with sobs.

“Easy, easy, honey. Easy. Tell us what happened,” I said softly, stroking her hair.

Emily stepped back slightly, wiping her eyes. “The man from the restaurant… that was Mr. Harris, my boss. And the reason he was so rude to you is because he thinks you’re both dead.”

My jaw dropped.

“He’s been putting a lot of pressure on me at work,” Emily continued. “I couldn’t keep up with him and I needed an excuse to take a vacation, so I told him… I said I needed a vacation to go to his funerals!”

George frowned. “So you lied about our… absence?”

Emily nodded, embarrassed. “Yes, I said that they had both passed away and that I needed to attend their funerals. It was the only way I could think of to get some relief.”

I exclaimed, bringing my hand to my mouth. “Oh, Emily…”

“When they came to the restaurant, I was terrified that my lie would be exposed. I panicked and… I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt them.”

George’s face softened, but there was still a hint of sadness in his eyes. “Abigail also told us that she saw you arguing with him. What was it about?”

Emily took a deep breath, her hands shaking.

“Mr. Harris has been asking me to do things that are not right,” she said. “Dodgy things to make the company look good to customers. I have had problems with this, and we argued because I refused to do it.”

I felt my heart break for her. The weight of the world seemed to be on her shoulders, and she had been carrying it alone.

“Honey, you should have come to us sooner. We are here for you, always.”

Emily’s tears began to flow freely again. “I know, and I regret everything. I’m so sorry for lying to you and pretending I didn’t know you. I was scared and made terrible decisions.”

George stood up and walked over, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Emily, we’re hurt by what you did, but we understand. The pressures you’ve been under… no one should have to face that alone. We forgive you.”

I nodded and hugged her again. “We forgive you, sweetheart. We love you, no matter what.”

The three of us sat together on the couch, a family once again, hugging each other and talking about the pain. Emily’s remorse was palpable, and so was our relief at having her back.

“I’ve decided to leave my job,” Emily said after a while, her voice firmer. “I can’t continue working under these conditions. I’ve found a new position at a smaller company where they value integrity and treat their employees well.”

George smiled, pride shining in his eyes. “That’s our girl. We knew you’d find a way out.”

I squeezed her hand, feeling a deep sense of peace. “You’ve always been so strong, Emily. We’re here for you and we’re so proud of the woman you’ve become.”

As the sun set outside, casting a warm glow through the windows, I realized that our family was stronger than ever. We had faced a storm and come out the other side, together. And that, more than anything, was what mattered.

The bonds of our family, tested and mended, would carry us through. Emily had learned a hard lesson, but she had also found the strength to make the right choices. And we, her loving grandparents, would always be here to support her, with open arms and hearts full of love.
