The elderly woman lived on the first floor, in an apartment with foggy windows and wilted ficus plants on the windowsill. No one really knew who she was. The neighbors knew one thing: every day, precisely at six in the morning, she went out to the trash bins with a large faded bag. And started digging. For a long time. As if she was searching for something important.
— There she goes again…
— Maybe she’s looking for food? Or bottles?
— No, she’s just crazy.
— Or a witch. Her eyes are like an owl’s, — the locals discussed.

In the same building lived a nine-year-old girl. She often saw the grandmother from the window and couldn’t understand why she did this every day. One day, curiosity overcame fear. When her mother went to work, she went down to the yard and approached closer.
— Grandma… did you lose something?
The girl expected harshness, but the grandmother suddenly whispered:
— Have you seen a baby here?
The girl was stunned.
— Who?

— A boy… very small… wrapped in a blanket. I lost him. He’s somewhere around here.
With these words, she bent over the trash again and continued rummaging through the old bags, no longer paying attention to the girl.
The girl ran home in terror and told her mother everything in the evening. She went pale and only whispered:
— Don’t go near her anymore, do you hear? Stay away.
A week later, the elderly woman died — right by the trash bins. Stroke. The ambulance came quickly, but it was too late. The bag she never parted with was taken by the cleaners. And a few days later, people started whispering on the bench by the entrance:
— Did you hear what they found out about her?
— About whom?
— About that grandmother. When she was fifteen, she secretly gave birth to a child. At home. The father was twice her age, apparently a neighbor. She hid everything. She gave birth — and immediately threw the child away. In the trash. Her mother then beat her and kicked her out.

— Oh God…
— Since then, she lost her mind. Sometimes she was in a mental hospital, sometimes at home. Then she completely shut herself off. And every day she went to the trash bins. Searching. For her child.
