That day, the maternity ward was overcrowded. Doctors were running from room to room. The doctor had just finished a difficult surgery and was about to catch his breath for a moment when a new call came in: patient in late pregnancy, complicated labor, urgently needed an experienced doctor.
He put on a fresh gown, washed his hands, and confidently walked into the labor ward. But at that very moment, his heart sank. On the bed in front of him was her.
The woman he had once loved more than life itself. The one who held his hand for seven years, swearing she would always be by his side, and then disappeared without explanation. Now she lay there, sweaty, her face twisted in pain, clutching her phone tightly. Their eyes met.
— You?.. — she whispered with difficulty. — You’re my doctor?
The man gritted his teeth, nodded, and without a word, rolled the bed toward the operating room.
The labor was difficult. Blood pressure dropped, the baby’s heart rate slowed. He gave instructions, led the team, remained calm, even though inside he felt torn apart.
Only one thought echoed in his mind: “Why her? Why now?”
— This… is my child? — escaped from him.
— What nonsense… — the woman turned away, but her voice trembled.
He lifted the corner of the blanket and froze. On the tiny shoulder of the baby was a birthmark. Exactly like his own. In the same spot.
— God… — his voice broke. — He has my birthmark. Is this my son?
She covered her face with her hands. Her shoulders shook. And finally, she whispered barely audibly:
— Yes. It’s your child.
— Why did you stay silent? Why did you just disappear? — he spoke softly, but every word carried pain.
She raised her tear-filled eyes.
— I found out I was pregnant almost immediately before I left. I knew that for you, medicine always came first. Career, scientific papers, surgeries… A child would have been an obstacle for you. I was scared. I decided it was better to disappear than to hold you back.
He carefully approached her bed, took her hand, and held it tightly.
— I would have given up everything for you. Career, positions… because nothing is more important than this moment. Nothing is more important than you.
And the little one quietly fell asleep, as if unaware that his arrival had changed everything — both their past and their future.
